In There's Nothing Left to Prove, award-winning artist Shakia Harris creates a powerful abstract portrait of a Black woman with long, flowing curls. The dynamic textures and vibrant swirls of color emphasize the beauty and individuality of natural hair, standing boldly against a subdued background.

This piece reflects Shakia’s personal journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. For years, she was conditioned to believe her natural hair was inferior, leading her to chemically straighten it into her twenties. After watching the documentary Good Hair, Shakia began to unlearn these harmful ideals and embrace her curls in all their glory.

The painting’s title captures the essence of her realization: that natural beauty needs no validation. Through this work, Shakia hopes to inspire others to celebrate their authenticity and wear their natural hair proudly, knowing there is nothing left to prove.
