Shakia used thick, expressive layers of oil paint to create We Need to Smile, a small but exuberant bird painting filled with movement, color, and personality. Soft blush pinks, dusty rose, coral, warm red, creamy ivory, and touches of deep charcoal come together in this loose, impressionistic composition.

Rather than carefully defining every feather, Shakia allowed the palette knife to do much of the talking. Thick swaths of paint build the bird almost sculpturally, with individual marks, ridges, drips, and overlapping layers creating a surface that begs to be seen up close.
